Some have described Valparaíso as the “international capital of street art”. It’s an apt title. Valpo’s eclectic mix of traditional graffiti and sponsored street art has turned the city into an open-air art gallery. The sides of buildings have become the canvases for many of the worlds premier graffiti artists, and a number of large street art festivals have been hosted to bring color to some of the cities less recognized neighborhoods. For example, the the 2012 Graffiti Festival in Cerro Polanco transformed the area overnight into a tourist destination.
The sheer variety of colors, themes, and styles are unmatched in South America, and these public works paint the sides of nearly every building and permeate every corner of the city.
If I had to choose one reason why I would recommend people visit Valparaíso, it would be this incredible art.
