Easter Island has a permanent population of a little less than 6,000 people, and of that population, more than half live in the town of Hanga Roa. If you’re a tourist on the island, you’re probably staying here – the location of the overwhelming majority of modern amenities and hotels/hostels. Despite being less interesting than some of the more well known sights on the island, Hanga Roa has it’s appeal. After all, how many towns have the ocean and moia (the famous monolothic statues) within walking distance of your accommodation. It’s definitely a town unlike any I’ve been in before.
The beaches and moai, in addition to a free museum that teaches you everything you need to know about the history of the island, make Hanga Roa a great place to spend your first afternoon on the island (flights from Santiago arrive at around 1pm).
